A defining technique used in my work is “Hard Edging” in which the strict, precise lines are created using a masking method with painter’s tape. The straight lines give the illusion that some of these works are made virtually. I use color gradients and transitions to add movement within, and outside, hard edged lines. Clean, precise edges between layers demonstrate the elasticity in acrylic paints.
I work primarily in acrylic, though colors-hifting water colors appear occasionally as whimsical accents. The beauty in trying to recreate the fluidity of color as seen between the bands in a rainbow is a main drive. Geometric shapes and repetitive patterns weave their way through my art, giving audiences the impression that my work is digitally created. The use of metal colors, such as gold and silver, add depth to the way light plays and reflects on the canvas, almost adding a mirror effect in some works.
Canvas is generally sourced from a multitude of avenues – online, the local art store, the not-so-local art stores, and old canvas needing new life. While I don’t shy away from other brands, the acrylics I use are primarily from Golden Artist Colors, in both heavy body and high fluids. Occasionally I dabble in color-shifting watercolor which I source from IUILE Watercolors.
